Apparatus”. Because the diving environment in different areas of the island has unique characteristics it gives Puerto Rico a wide variety of diving, both in terms of the underwater terrain and the diving conditions.
The water temperature in the coast of Puerto Rico average about 80º F a
ll year-round with a visibility up to 60 feet and depths of dive sites ranging between 30 feet to over 70 feet.
Islands east of Puerto Rico, ripe for scuba diving Puerto Rico include Culebra and Vieques. The establishment of the Culebra Marine Reserve Park ensures that its dive sites are protected. Cayo Lobito is a 75-foot dive where nurse sharks and jacks are plentiful, while Cayo Raton is known for smaller residents.
Also Luis Peña island is a superb dive, where big Spanish Lobsters are very common, and a reef that is dotted by small caves full of surprises.
Las Tres Rocas (The Three Rocks) in Vieques island has a depth range between 50-100 feet and compose of a mountainous reef with a smooth slope packed with an astonishing array of corals and beautiful sponges of all sizes, colors and shapes.
There is a wide variety of fleshy corals like cactus coral. This reef is a perfect place to appreciate the different types of coral, and the consistently crystal-clear waters make this reef perfect for underwater photos.
Come scuba diving in Puerto Rico
Try La Parguera in Lajas for its 20 miles long wall. Located six miles offshore, La Parguera Wall is a giant coral reef extending more than 20 miles and dropping at a maximum depth of 1,500 feet. Fingers of reefs reach for the depths and green morays and sea turtles, as well as elkhorn and black coral are all common here.
West of Mayaguez area are the offshore islands Mona and Desecheo. For divers willing to brave the challenging sea conditions of the Mona Passage, Mona Island is 45 miles west of Puerto Rico or about a 6 hours boat trip and considered by many the Galapagos of the Caribbean and a permit has to be obtained from the Puerto Rico’s Department of Natural Resources.
There are more than 250 species of fish and some of the healthiest coral growth in the region. Mona also straddles the migration route of whales, dolphin and game fish on the move between the Atlantic and Caribbean.
Desecheo island, with its colorful fringing reefs and massive underwater pinnacles, it is virtually unknown as a dive destination. Scuba diving and snorkeling at Desecheo Island boasts 100 to 150 foot visibility consistently.
Located about nine miles west of Aguadilla and 12 miles west of Rincon, and the journey will take from 30 minutes to one and a half-hour.
Desecheo island contains a Federal Wildlife preserve, and is host to dozens of dive sites. Its well-preserved marine ecosystem makes this a unique diving spot for all underwater enthusiasts.
Scuba diving, being a visual underwater experience, doesn’t include altering the underwater habitat in any way.
